Recently the popular TV-show Gran Turismo from TV8 visited our watch factory and we got the opportunity to guide the viewers through the manufacturing process of the Halda Space Discovery as well as the history of Halda. I also got to test-drive a unique 1950’s racing car from Veritas equipped with a Halda timing instrument from the same period.

We have received great response from Spain, where some of our very first customers are to be found. With the bold ambition that El Corte Inglés have stated, we were very pleased when they specifically asked for Halda to be a part of their new flagship store and that I got the opportunity to educate the store staff myself. Halda Watch Co. is invited to exhibit the Halda Space Discovery at the Gran Turismo Expo 2011 – Selected Car Show. The expo will feature the latest sports and luxury cars from manufacturers such as Lamborghini, Porsche, Jaguar, as well as vintage classics, along with the Halda watch.

Later this fall, on November the 21^st, Halda will be featured in the Gran Turismo tv-show where our CEO Mikael Sandström guides you through the history of Halda and the production process of the Space Discovery watch.

Ever since the presentation of the first modern Halda took place earlier this year the public attention and interest have been remarkable. We are both humbled and honored by this. However, a vast majority has importantly expressed a desire to learn more about the watch. One of the hardest tests a timepiece was ever put to is of course the one that was conducted during space mission STS-128, where astronauts truly gave Halda a run for its money. But there are other tough tests as well. Last week, the Halda Space Discovery completed a ten day testdrive over at KronosBlog. At the Halda Watch Company we agree with the words from one of the world’s leading watch magazines – Swiss Watch Makers.

As you know; their editorial team is constantly trying to discover what’s best out there. There are so many existing brands that bring out new models and many new brands that see the light, both in Switzerland and elsewhere in the world. Hence, the plethora of brands makes choice difficult, and there are never enough pages available according to Simone Riesen, Editor-in-chief.

It is therefore a gratifying testimonial that Swiss Watch Makers have chosen to feature Halda Space Discovery in their latest edition. 

The Halda Space Discovery unites clever functionality with slick design while pioneering use of highly advanced material in a watch. A piece like that can only be properly kept in a presentation case that can measure up to the  high level of quality, style and innovation of the time piece itself.

Such a case did not exist. Until now.

In 2010, Halda Watch Company challenged legendary Bohemian crystal glass craftsmanship specialist, Dr. Petr Larva of Larva Design Co, to invent a watch case with extraordinary qualities that would do the revolutionary concept of the first modern Halda justice.

After a year of product design and development, Dr. Larva has created the Halda Crystal Arc, a watch case made out of crystal, representing the sky, with a silver medal representing the moon, both resting on a metal base. Its presentation creates a levitation effect that makes the time piece appear to float freely in the box around the moon. Underneath, the metal base serves as a storage place for the components of the groundbreaking watch concept.

Dr. Petr Larva says, “The Halda Crystal Arc treats the watch like a piece of jewelry. And not just like any gem or valuable metal, the advanced hypermodern luxury jewelry box is inspired by the watch concept and made especially for space travelers.”

The Halda Crystal Arc will first be presented at the Basel Watch Fair in March 2011 together with the Halda Space Discovery and thereafter made available for Halda owners only per order.

The Halda Space Discovery has been selected to represent recent development in advanced technological tools used for space excursions in the ‘NASA – A Human Adventure exhibition’. The exhibition is designed to give museum visitors a closer look at the human exploration of space since its start in the 1960s, via current missions and on to possibilities for the yet unknown discoveries of tomorrow.

The Halda Space Discovery will be part of the exhibition as an example of the highly advanced electronic equipment modern astronauts depend on and use as part of their exploring of space.

The presentation of the very first modern Halda watch took place at a closed ceremony at the Grand Hotel in Stockholm on February 17^th. Aside the numbered time piece, astronaut Fuglesang also received a specially designed Flight Strap for his travel to space featuring his name and the flag of his home country, Sweden.

It is a true honor to provide leading astronauts with the Halda Space Discovery. It is the ultimate proof that we have succeeded in creating a product that actually works – and makes a real difference – in the extreme conditions in space.

That was the motto of Henning Hammarlund, the founder of Halda, back in 1887.  It has also been our guiding star ever since we took upon the task of bringing back Halda into the future. The 21^st century Halda concept carries his legacy forward in refusing to compromise on quality, functionality, style and innovation. And our driving force has been to develop a revolutionary concept with one uniting feature:  enabling the watch to be transformed to befit all situations in a life with the highest of demands. The Halda Space Discovery is our first demonstration of this. It has been developed over years together with merited engineers, renowned watch makers and an astronaut.  It was tested in the most extreme environments – space. After months of fine-tuning the first Halda Space Discovery was ready for delivery. Number 002 out of a limited series of 128, has now been delivered to Christer Fuglesang. Fuglesang has been part of the development of the watch by contributing with insights and list of demands for needs and requirements in outer space – as well as the execution of the final test in space during his NASA space mission on board space shuttle Discovery in 2009.

 The delivery took place in Stockholm on February 17^th at the Grand Hotel at a closed ceremony where Fuglesang also received a specially designed Flight Strap featuring his name and flag of home country Sweden.

 This also starts the next journey for Halda. The Halda Space Discovery is actually just the beginning.

Halda has been chosen to represent Sweden thanks to its “manifestation of advanced and pioneering technical engineering and fine mechanics”. Thus, Halda is recognized as a prime example of the finest that Sweden has to offer in terms of innovation, design, and creativity. We are humble to have qualified to the list of leading Swedish companies such as Ericsson, ASSA Abloy, and Sandvik that also will represent the nation in Shanghai.

The Swedish theme during the World Expo is “The Spirit of Innovation”, and it is this spirit that has been the foundation behind Halda ever since Henning Hammarlund founded the brand and the company back in 1887, and with the launch of the Halda Space Discovery we are bringing his legacy to life.

Not only are we proud to represent Sweden at the 2010 World Expo in Shanghai, we are also certain that Halda Space Discovery will challenge all visitors to rethink the whole meaning of what a watch will constitute in the future.
